A Message From Dr. Lundell

Coffee Can Help Lower Inflammation!

A recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition* indicates that coffee consumption helps lower inflammation in overweight/obese postmenopausal women.

Obesity can be detrimental to our physical health. When we take in more food than we need, we create oxidative stress. When we metabolize extra food and try to store it as fat, it creates oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and our system's ability to detoxify or easily repair the resulting damage leaving us vulnerable to disease.
Lower inflammation leads to a lower risk of heart disease. Obesity can cause an increase in inflammation and in C-reactive protein levels, the levels of which rise in response to inflammation. As everyone on the Heart Team knows chronic low-grade inflammation is the source of lots of the disorders and diseases that plague modern man. Arteriosclerosis, insulin resistance, diabetes, oxidative stress, stroke, congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s, sleep apnea, swollen legs, etc., etc. are all related to chronic inflammation.

The study focused on coffee because it is so widely consumed in Western society. “In the Western world, coffee consumption is ubiquitous and represents the only liquid, other than water, that is consumed almost everyday by a majority of adults (Storey et al 2006). Coffee consumption has been associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, CVD, breast cancer and inflammatory diseases (Andersen et al 2006, Ganmaa et al 2008, Salazar-Martinez et al 2004, van Dam and Feskens 2002).”

Study participants were 344 healthy but sedentary and overweight postmenopausal women with a high BMI index (Body Mass Index is the measure of weight along with height. Higher BMI usually indicates those who are overweight) with a consideration of the effect of hormone replacement therapy. For those women no longer on hormone replacement therapy there was a significant correlation between drinking more than one cup of coffee a day and lowering C-reactive protein levels. As discussed above, lowering your C-reactive protein levels lowers your inflammation levels. In doing so, you help decrease your risk for heart disease, stroke as well as auto-immune diseases and more.

Drinking coffee is good for you and losing weight, even 10% of your body weight is crucial. Watch what you eat, add some exercise, take HeartShot and enjoy your JAVA!

Java Has Up to 6x the Antioxidants

Not all coffees are created equal. That’s because they don’t all have the HealthyRoast™ process to preserve the antioxidant value of coffee beans. Most people use ORAC value to measure the antioxidant level in foods, but we found a new standard for measuring antioxidant strength. Chlorogenic acid (CLA) is the most prevalent antioxidant found in coffee and studies have shown it is absorbed and metabolized by the body. We put Asantae Java up against other gourmet coffee brands to test the total CGA level as well as the total polyphenol level in a third-party independent laboratory test. Results showed that our Java has up to 6x the antioxidants of other coffees! Check out the results.
